The Wilks coefficient normalises for bodyweight so a lighter and a heavier lifter can be compared: multiply the weight lifted by the coefficient to get Wilks points. The strength-to-weight ratio is simply what you lifted divided by what you weigh.

Comparing strength across bodyweights

A 60 kg lifter deadlifting 200 kg and a 120 kg lifter deadlifting 300 kg — who’s stronger? Absolute weight says the heavier lifter; pound-for-pound the lighter one looks better. The Wilks coefficient settles it with a curve fitted to real lifting data, scaling every lift to a common yardstick so the comparison is fair across the bodyweight range.

What is the Wilks score?

The Wilks score is a points system that normalises a lift for bodyweight so lifters of different sizes can be compared fairly. It multiplies the weight lifted by a coefficient derived from a bodyweight polynomial — heavier lifters get a smaller coefficient because absolute strength tends to rise with size. It's the classic scoring method used across raw powerlifting.

How is the coefficient calculated?

The coefficient is 500 divided by a fifth-degree polynomial of your bodyweight in kilograms, with separate sets of constants for men and women. This tool uses the original Wilks formula. Enter your bodyweight and it computes the coefficient, then your Wilks points as weight lifted × coefficient.

What's the difference between the Wilks score and the strength-to-weight ratio?

The strength-to-weight ratio is simply what you lifted divided by what you weigh — a lift equal to 2× bodyweight gives a ratio of 2. It's intuitive but favours lighter lifters heavily. The Wilks score uses a curve fitted to real data to compare across the whole bodyweight range more evenly, which is why competitions use it to rank lifters and pick 'best lifter' awards.

Should I use my total or a single lift?

For a competition-style Wilks, use your combined squat, bench, and deadlift total. To compare a single lift — say your deadlift against a friend's — just enter that one lift instead. The coefficient is the same either way; only the weight you multiply by changes.
