Frequently Asked Questions
How does the plate calculator decide which plates to use?
It subtracts the bar weight from your target, halves the rest to get the load per side, then packs that from the heaviest plate down to the lightest. For the standard, nested plate sizes gyms actually stock (25/20/15/10/5/2.5/1.25 kg, or 45/35/25/10/5/2.5 lb) that greedy approach always uses the fewest plates possible.
What if my plates can't make the exact weight?
Any amount the available plates can't build is reported as an 'unreachable' figure per side rather than silently rounded off, so you can see you're a fraction short and decide whether to add micro-plates or adjust the target. Fractional and micro plates (1.25 kg, 0.5 kg, 0.25 kg) are included by default on the kg setting.
Does the bar weight matter that much?
Yes — the bar is part of the total. A standard Olympic barbell is 20 kg (about 45 lb), but women's bars, technique bars, and specialty bars differ. Setting the right bar weight is the difference between loading 100 kg and accidentally loading 80 kg of plates on top of a 20 kg bar.
Can I use it for pounds?
Switch the unit to pounds and it uses a 45 lb bar and standard imperial plate sizes. All the arithmetic stays the same; only the denominations change.
